A representation of the primarily natural watercourses, including rivers, lakes, marshes, and reservoirs, in Oxford County. In 2008, County of Oxford staff undertook a project to assess and consolidate a number of watercourse layers (referred to internally as drainage layers) within the County's GIS. The purpose was to have a single source of data that is referenced for both mapping and analysis, that spatially represents what is on the ground, that is consistent with the drainage layer referenced by other agencies (including provincial ministries, conservation authorities, etc), and that includes the value-added attribute information that had been attributed against various versions of the drainage layer within the County's GIS. The spatial data that was the basis for this new consolidated watercourse layer came from the Natural Resource Values Information System (NRVIS) water_segment shapefile. Additional attributes such as those that provide an indication of fish habitat (cold water, warm water and threatened or endangered species), archeological potential, etc have been transferred to this spatial data from existing drainage layers in use at the County. This data layer further includes an indication as to whether the feature is permanent or intermittent. In October, 2013, the drainage_poly coverage was converted to this geodatabase feature class and renamed Waterbody. |
